Oven Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

Our kids had a favorite Sunday evening meal.  Hot ham and cheese sandwiches! These sandwiches are a great way to give the kids or  grandkids a sandwich upgrade.

I first had this simple version of hot ham and cheese at the home of Miriam Welty.  Miriam and her husband “adopted” me in my first year at a Christian college.  I can’t pop these mini sandwiches into the oven without warm thoughts about  her kindness and all she taught me about being a wife and mother.

We often have these on New Year’s Eve.   My thirty three year old daughter, Jenny, tells me these sandwiches are now a family favorite and they have them at her house often.

Give them a try when you want something warm and fast.

Miriam’s Hot Ham and Cheese


Small rolls- fresh bakery rolls are best

2  – 3 Tbs. very finely minced onion


Yellow Mustard

Deli ham or leftover ham slices

Colby cheese


Saute the onion in 1/2 a stick of butter until tender

Add a couple tablespoons of yellow mustard to the butters and onion and heat just until it bubbles.

Spread the mustard onion mixture on both sides of the bun.  Then add as much ham and cheese as you would like.

Place sandwiches on a large sheet of aluminum foil and wrap  and seal the foil tightly around the sandwiches.  Put the foil packet of sandwiches on a baking sheet.

Place in 350 degree oven for 5  to 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and gooey.

Use more or less of ingredients depending on how many family members are home for dinner!

For a fun dinner, serve with chips or veggies and dip and our favorite – root beer floats!
