Old-Fashioned Games to Play With Kids – Part 1

Posted on: September 5th, 2011 by Kay Swatkowski

My grandma taught me to jump rope.  She loved to hold one end and twirl while my sisters and I took times with Mabel, Mabel!  We jumped for hours everyday!  I have to say that we expended so much energy jumping rope that we were three pretty skinny girls!    Another great jump rope rhyme was Miss Mary Mack.  Do you remember that one?  Here are the words which you can find at any number of kids’ games sites.  It would be fun for Grandma to teach this rhyme to her girls and take her turn at twirling the jump rope.

Miss Mary Mack

Miss Mary Mack Mack Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back.

She asked her mother, mother, mother
For 50 cents, cents, cents
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants
Jump over the fence, fence, fence.

They jumped so high, high, high
They reached the sky, sky, sky
And they didn’t come back, back, back
‘Til the 4th of July, ly, ly!

Another fun activity would be to make homemade jump ropes.  Here is a great project I found on pinterest.  Be sure to follow this link back to the original to get the best directions for making this colorful jump rope with your grandchild. familyfun.go.com
